LegalZoom: Getting Legal Help Online

A while back Joe Konrath published an article titled Death and the Self-Pubbed Writer, citing the need for self-published authors to establish a legal procedure so their literary estates can continue after death. It really made me think. It’s true; as part of our general preparedness, we all need a will and a power of attorney so our family and heirs will not be left high and dry in case of our demise.

2-women+laptop-OpBut as sole proprietors in charge of our own small business, there are many other legal services published authors require. Unfortunately, legal services from brick-and-mortar law firms can be pricey. Because of the ease of use, many now choose to entrust the drafting and filing of legal documents and the resolution of legal matters to online attorney services.

LegalZoom is an online platform that has been providing legal advice and legal documentation services to businesses and individuals for over a decade. During this time, it has expanded and diversified its products, reaching an ever-wider audience. LegalZoom is not a law firm; it’s a platform that connects licensed attorneys with people and companies that need legal assistance and is active in 40 states across the U.S.

Supporting Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses
Legal documents are a critical part of business operations. But forms, agreements, contracts, and all those legal papers you need in order to protect your business are often difficult to draft and file properly without expert knowledge. High attorney fees and cumbersome traditional legal procedures often deter companies and individuals from hiring a lawyer. For many startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses, a resource such as LegalZoom is an effective solution, ensuring legal protection at discounted rates.

Innovation is Disruptive
LegalZoom is an innovative digital tool, which makes legal consultancy accessible to all. Its success shows that the democratic nature of the Internet can penetrate even impervious industries, and legal services are no exception. LegalZoom CEO John Suh points out the company’s appetite for disruption. Indeed, disruption of conventional business patterns in the world of legal services is part of this innovative platform’s mission.

Convenience and Affordability
LegalZoom makes legal consultancy convenient and affordable. For a modest monthly fee, businesses can benefit from expert legal advice. The process is simple and easy to navigate, and services are fast and effective. Moreover, they are accompanied by a satisfaction guarantee. As part of the company’s policy regarding transparent practices, besides upfront prices, customers can check users’ feedback by reading the numerous LegalZoom reviews that are consistently posted online. Using LegalZoom, common legal issues can be handled in a professional and timely manner, allowing you to focus on your core operation: writing books.

Get Your Legal Documents in Three Simple Steps
One of the key features of LegalZoom is its user-friendly interface, which simplifies the process of obtaining legal documents. Whether you want to incorporate your business, make a will, or draft a business agreement, there are only three steps you need to take.

  1. Complete an Online Questionnaire
Once you create an account on the LegalZoom platform, you are prompted to answer a series of questions which define your needs and help their attorneys provide you with personalized legal support. If you’re not ready to go through the process, you can return at a later time to complete the questionnaire. Your answers will be saved by the system, so you don’t have to worry about wasting time. You can also contact customer support for guidance.
  2. LegalZoom Review Process
During this stage, your documents will be reviewed by LegalZoom staff to verify that they are accurate and thorough. If necessary, you may be contacted for additional information.
  3. Document Delivery
Once reviewed, your documents are ready to be printed, then delivered to you. You can also benefit from legal paper filing, offered for many LegalZoom services. This saves time and allows you to rest assured that your documents will safely reach their destination.

LegalZoom offers all kinds of services authors can use. They’ll help you set up an LLC, a DBA, register a trademark or a copyright, and many other things.

I’ve used Legal Zoom twice (will, LLC) and they have been great. They call if they have questions, they update you on every step of the process. It’s amazing how easy it is.

Super useful information, Molly! Thanks! I don’t know if they can work with international clients, but I intend to find out. You mentioned copyright. Is this standard procedure for indie writers and a completed manuscript? People easily send their work over to beta readers, reviewers, etc. Is this considered safe? Maybe Californication and the way Mia stole Hank’s manuscript and published it as her own turning herself into a best-selling author got to me and I’m overreacting… 🙂

Ah, Maria, copyright is a whole other blog post, and I’m not sure how it works internationally. Copyright is implied in all works and does not have to be registered to be effective, but here in the U.S. we can “officially register” a copyright for $35.00, in the event a writer wants to persue a copyright infringement for damages. Don’t take my word on that, that’s an unofficial explanation.
