Veteran’s Day Blog Tour de Troops

This weekend, November 11–14, my friend Terri Giuliano Long, author of the best-selling novel In Leah’s Wake, joins 50 indie authors in Blog Tour de Troops, a charity blog hop sponsored by the Indie Book Collective. Terri is hosting Emmy-winning film editor Nina Gilberti, currently a full-time editor for the hit CBS crime drama Criminal Minds. Nina is also an indie filmmaker. On Terri’s blog, Nina talks about her documentary, When Jane and Johnny Come Marching Homeless, a powerful film about the horrors faced by some veterans upon their return home after war.

Did you know that one-third of the people living on the streets are veterans who served in the Vietnam War? In addition to physical homelessness, many vets also face emotional, psychological, and spiritual homelessness. They struggle with issues like Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD), nightmares, hyper-vigilance (always on high alert), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Their struggles can result in high divorce rates, joblessness, spousal abuse, and suicide. Naturally, these life-altering problems also affect the spouse, children, and parents of veterans.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.

With her upcoming film, When Jane & Johnny Come Marching Homeless, Nina hopes to inspire our nation to care, to generate real compassion, and perhaps create a movement towards profound healing and understanding for these veterans and their families.

Just saw this though Veteran’s Day is months past. Thanks for being part of this. If I’d known about it, I’d have joined in.
I’m a veteran and still serving. Next time you hear about the 1% – consider the other 1%. Less than 1% of the American population serves in the military. Less than 1% carry the burden of a free nation for the majority of the nation. Remember that when you next hear about military benefits being reduced or cut. Less than 1% ensure the security of the nation for all.
